“I have sought an appointment with the Prime Minister to discuss the problems faced by sugarcane farmers and the drought situation in Karnataka state. I will request that an all-party delegation, including opposition leaders, be allowed to meet the Prime Minister. Opposition leaders had earlier said they would join the delegation, and I hope they will do so this time” Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Sunday. He was speaking to the media at Mysuru airport.
On the sugarcane farmers’ protest, CM Shivakumar said he had spoken to the farmers and once again appealed to them to call off their agitation. “Everyone should sit together and find a solution to the problem. There is no point in politicising the issue or making allegations against anyone. As the Chief Minister, I have a responsibility to do more than just blame others. Our aim is to ensure the welfare of farmers and the people. The livelihood of farmers is important to us,” he said. Asked about the demand for the State government to contribute towards the support price for sugarcane, Shivakumar said the matter could be discussed. “There are different types of farmers in the state, and we must consider the interests of all of them,” he said. On the arrest of a suspected terrorist in Kalaburagi, Chief Minister said police will investigate the matter freely. “I will gather information and give the police complete freedom to investigate. We should not make political statements on such matters,” he said.
