Police Martyrs’ Day is not merely a day of remembrance, but also an occasion to recognise the courage, dedication and sacrifice of police personnel who stand between danger and the safety of the public, Uttara Kannada DC K Lakshmi Priya said on Wednesday. She was speaking at the Police Martyrs’ Day programme held at the Police Parade Ground. She paid floral tributes at the martyrs’ memorial.
“While people sleep peacefully in their homes, police personnel remain on duty. They manage crowds and ensure security during festivals and other public events, while also risking their lives to protect people during emergencies such as accidents, natural disasters and communal tensions. Society must always respect their service, courage and commitment to duty, she said.
Behind the uniform of every police personnel, there is a family. When a police officer dies in the line of duty, the nation loses a protector, while the officer’s family loses a loved one. Therefore, paying tribute to martyrs should not be limited to offering flowers and a ceremonial salute. Their families must also be remembered and provided with the necessary support. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten, she said.
Superintendent of Police Deepan M.N. read out the names of police personnel who had lost their lives while performing their duties during various operations. The gathering observed a two-minute silence in honour of the fallen police personnel.
