A man accused of assaulting a jail warden and threatening to kill him has been sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 40,000 by the Principal District and Sessions Court, Udupi.

The incident took place around 1.20 pm on December 3, 2011, at the verandah in front of the first barrack of Udupi District Prison in Hiriyadka. The jail warden was instructing inmates to proceed to their respective barracks as part of the process of taking the prisoner count.

According to the complaint, undertrial prisoner number 1249, Safan Hussain alias Razak, who was standing near the kitchen, threatened the warden with murder and assaulted him on the left cheek.
